What Are Common Causes of Rideshare Accidents?

As rideshare services continue to grow in popularity, there are more and more of these drivers on U.S. roads. We expect rideshare drivers to always follow the rules of the road and applicable laws, but sometimes, mistakes are made and people get hurt as a result. The following are some of the most common causes of rideshare accidents:

Distracted Driving

In nearly every category, distracted driving is one of the leading causes of car accidents in the United States. Distracted driving includes doing anything other than driving while behind the wheel, including talking with passengers, eating or drinking, and of course, using a cell phone.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2019 alone, at least 3,142 lives were lost as a result of distracted driving.

Impaired Driving

Rideshare drivers have a duty to stay sober while driving. In fact, every licensed driver owes all road users a duty of care not to drive while intoxicated.

Regardless, people still choose to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or other drugs. Year after year, intoxicated driving is one of the leading causes of car accidents in the U.S.

According to the NHTSA, about 28 people in the U.S. lose their lives in drunk driving accidents each day. That equates to about one death every 52 minutes.

Driver Fatigue

Like truckers, rideshare drivers are often on the road for several hours at a time in order to get by. Other rideshare drivers pick up passengers as a side job in addition to working another full-time position.

No matter the reason, it is relatively common for rideshare drivers to eventually become fatigued after so many hours on the road. According to the NHTSA, there were 697 fatalities as a result of driver fatigue during 2019.
